Bianca Rojas scored five goals and Rachel Skinner chipped in with a hat trick of her own as the Lady Hawks im-proved to 2-0 on the season with their second win in five days.
Shorter also got 19 saves from senior goalie Dandi Am-mons, who helped the Lady Hawks overcome Methodist’s 36-29 advantage in the shot count.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead with the help of three goals from Dixe and led 8-6 at the half as Dixe and Rojas scored the final two goals of the opening 30 minutes af-ter Methodist rallied to tie the game at 6-6 on an Amber Jurk-ovac goal with 5:04 left until halftime.
Rachel Skinner opened the second half with a goal 13 sec-onds in and Dixe scored twice more and assisted on a Katie Ott goal to put Shorter up 12-7 with 22:52 remaining.
Rojas scored off a feed from Amber Hicks 1:36 later to give the Lady Hawks their largest lead of 13-7 and the Monarchs would get no closer than a two goal margin the rest of the way as Shorter head coach Brittni Dulaney got her second win in as many tries in her first year with the Lady Hawks.
Ott and Alicia Acton finished with a goal apiece for the Lady Hawks, who were successful on 13 of 16 clear attempts and scooped up 15 ground balls. Rojas paced Shorter with five ground balls and Dixe caused two turnovers.
Jasmine Stephens led Methodist (0-2) with five goals and Abby Harmon had four for the hosts.
Shorter plays again on Sunday, Feb. 27 when it completes its two-game road trip against North Carolina Wesleyan Col-lege. Game time is set for noon.
BASEBALL: Shorter 11, Virginia Intermont 1
Hank Stewart went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and two RBI to lead Shorter to a victory over Virginia Intermont Col-lege at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
Jordan Hollis also went yard for his only hit of the day to help the Hawks improve to 16-2 overall and win their 11th game in their last 12 outings.
Cody Hooper went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and Lou Amargo, Dadynoel Lorenzo and Kurtis Robinson also hit two-baggers for the Hawks, who outhit Virginia Intermont 13-6 and got a gem on the mound from starter Brick Carter.
Carter allowed just one earned run on six hits in seven complete innings. He struck out nine, walked none, and has now fanned 38 batters on the year against just three walks.
Ben Stell worked a perfect eighth for Shorter during which he needed only six pitches while recording a strikeout.
Carter gave up Virginia Intermont’s only run in the first before locking down the visitors and turning the heavy lifting over to his offense.
Blake McCullers hit an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1 in the third before Stewart crushed the first pitch he saw from Intermont starter Andrew Jessup deep over the left field fence for a 3-1 Shorter lead.
Willie Lewis hit an RBI triple and Amargo a sacrifice fly in the fourth as Shorter extended its lead to 5-1 and Hollis’ first home run of the year made it 6-1 Shorter in the fifth.
The Hawks drew a pair of bases loaded walks in the sev-enth and after scoring twice more in the eighth, Lorenzo pro-vided the final tally with an RBI double to close out the eighth frame.
Virginia Intermont (2-15) had two hits in the first inning and just four the rest of the way. Lucas Dobbins led the guests offensively with a 2-for-3 effort at the dish.
Shorter and Virginia Intermont wrap up their three-game set on Saturday, Feb. 26 with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
SOFTBALL: Shorter downs UVA-Wise, Bryan
Charlsie Broome went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Bre Johnson, Stephanie Owenby and Libby Munson had two RBI apiece as Shorter blanked UVA-Wise 11-0 in the Lady Hawks’ second game of the Shorter University Softball Invitational.
The Lady Hawks beat Bryan College 12-2 in their first game of the day, and now stand 5-3 overall on the young season.
Kacey Hawkshead worked five innings for the win and tossed a one-hit shutout with the help of five strikeouts. The freshman needed just 58 pitches to score her second win of the season and even went 1-for-1 at the plate.
Shorter wasted little time jumping on the Cavaliers early.
Munson and Kara Pollock hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the first to put Shorter up 2-0 before the Lady Hawks plated five runs in their half of the second.
Broome and Jessica Womble hit back-to-back RBI triples as Shorter went up 4-0. Munson brought home Womble with a successful squeeze bunt back to the pitcher and after Pollock singled and Brooke Bryan doubled to put runners on second and third, Johnson ripped a two-run double in the gap in right center to put Shorter ahead 7-0.
Owenby hit a two-run single in the fourth and Broome dealt the final blow with a two-run double in the same frame as Shorter ran away with the victory.
Amanda Albertson went 3-for-3 with three infield singles, Bryan finished 2-for-3 and Johnson and Pollock each went 2-for-2 for the Lady Hawks, who exploded for 15 hits and played error free softball in their Friday nightcap.
Shorter plays three games on Saturday, Feb. 26 to wrap up the Invitational. The Lady Hawks take on Thomas University at noon, Union College (Ky.) at 2 p.m. and Montreat College at 6 p.m. All games will be played at Alto Park.
