The County Commission will have a public hearing at its 2 p.m. meeting on the budget, which relies on drawing $830,315 from savings to bolster the projected $46.9 million in revenue. No property tax increase is proposed.
Commission Chairman Irwin Bagwell said plans are to schedule at least one more work session on the document.
“The hearing is on the proposed budget,” he emphasized. “It can change until we adopt it at our (Jan. 22) meeting.”
Tuesday is the board’s first meeting of the year. In addition to confirming the assistant county manager, county attorney, auditor and banks, commissioners will certify Gary Burkhalter as interim county manager.
Burkhalter, the county finance director, assumed the dual role of interim manager when Blaine Williams left Dec. 31 for a position with Athens-Clarke County. The board also is slated to approve a revised employment agreement with Burkhalter.
Also on the 2 p.m. agenda is a public hearing on Vester Hill’s request to rezone three acres of farmland along Alabama Highway for a potential convenience store and gas station. The tract is almost at the state line.
The Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission recommended approval, 8-0, with the condition that no variances be allowed for the required landscaping, buffers and parking spaces.
“This is a gateway into the community,” Planning Director Sue Hiller said. “It’s the first thing people will see when they come across the state line.”
There already is a convenience store nearby, but Hill said he’s had several calls from people interested in building one on his land.
Commissioners also are scheduled to hear from Chief Tax Appraiser Bill McWhorter during their caucus, which starts at 12:30 p.m.
Burkhalter said McWhorter wants to present a reorganization plan aimed at easing the transition when he retires at the end of the year.
The board meets at the County Administration Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave. Both sessions are open to the public.
