After building a double-digit lead in the second half, Berry women's basketball held on for a 51-49 victory over Agnes Scott on Tuesday evening at the Cage Center.

Berry returned to .500 as its record now stands at 6-6. Agnes Scott drops to 5-7.

Holding onto a one-point advantage at halftime, Berry worked its way to a commanding 14-point lead in the second half.

"I think we finally got some energy," said Berry Head Coach Stephanie Dunn.

Mel McLean led Berry with 14 points. Tara Mullinax had 9 points and 11 rebounds for the home team.

Just when it looked like the game had been sealed, Agnes Scott came within one point with less than a minute remaining.

ASC fouled Chanlir Segarra (9 points, 7 assists) with seven seconds left. She made the first and missed the second free throw. The Scotties got the rebound but could not get off a shot to tie or win the game.

"They put on a different defense, and we got lackadaisical with our passing and didn't handle it well," Dunn said. "They got a few stops, built some confidence in that defense and were able to close the lead."

Berry led in rebounds, 38-36. The Vikings shot 37-percent (19-51) to ASC's 34-percent (21-16). The Scotties were 4-4 from the free throw line to BC's 11-14.

Genfine Sapateh notched game-bests of 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Scotties.

Berry will return to play on the road against Covenant College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
