The Shorter Hawks wrestling team took first place in the recently completed Georgia Intercollegiate Championships at Life University.

The Hawks were able to defeat Life University, Brewton-Parker College, Darton College and Truett-McConnell College.

DeMarcus Thomas was crowned champion for the 133-pound weight class. He earned the title by defeating Danny Kimball from Truett-McConnell by major decision, 13-3, and then pinning Will Hale from Brewton-Parker in the finals.

Gabriel Bird (149-pounds) came back from a loss in the semifinals to defeat Robbie Collum (Brewton-Parker) with the 2-0 decision to take third place.

T.J. Duncan took second in the 157-pound weight class, losing the one-point decision to Oliver Brukardt from Life University, 8-7.

Jared Rector claimed the 174-pound title, pinning his first two opponents. He then defeated two Hawks who were wrestling unattached to the program — Wally Figaro and Gregory Lane — to take the weight class.

Also competing for the Hawks were Brandon Dyer (141-pounds, second place), Andrew Broome (165-pound), Joseph Hinchman (184-pound), John Hoyt (197-pound, second place), and Ryan Lauderbaugh (285-pound).
