The participants at the Floyd County Spelling Bee found themselves with some “anxiety” as they tried to exhibit “perfectionism” and not get into a “predicament.”

But if three participants had not missed those words, fourth-grader Zayden Sullins may not have walked away as the system spelling bee champion, defeating ten other children in grades four through eight.

Zayden spelled “vernal” to take home the prize.

The Garden Lakes Elementary School student said his parents had him study for the bee, held Friday at the Floyd County School System Central Offices on Riverside Parkway.

The runner-up was Zach Mitchell of Coosa Middle School.
