The Shorter women’s basketball team took advantage of 20 West Georgia turnovers to split the season series with the Gulf South Conference in-state rivals 62-54.

The game was another home victory for the Lady Hawks, offsetting the loss at Carrollton on Dec. 2 in overtime 61-55.

The Shorter (12-7, 7-4 GSC) defense held the West Georgia offense to 12 points in the first half, while shooting 17.9 percent from the field — connecting on only five baskets.

The Lady Hawks took advantage of the Wolves’ cold start to run out to a 30-12 halftime lead connecting on 48 percent of their shots from the floor while going 4-for-8 from behind the arc.

Former Coosa star Ieshia Alexander scored 12 of her 21 points prior to the intermission and was one of three players to record five first-half rebounds.

Alexander would lead the team in assists (four) and steals (three), while tying Lindsey Crawford with seven rebounds.

Kristin Nash would shoot 9-for-14 from the free throw line, including a stretch where she score six consecutive Lady Hawks points — all from line — on her way to scoring 17 points.

The Lady Hawks will host two GSC foes this week as West Florida (Feb. 7) and Valdosta State (Feb. 9) will visit the Winthrop-King Centre.

WEST GEORGIA 61

The Shorter men’s basketball team defeated West Georgia at the Winthrop-King Centre. The victory earned the Hawks a split of the season series against the fellow Gulf South Conference opponent.

Walter Hill scored 10 of his 17 points in the first half, along with Brandon Pullman scoring 10 of his 18 before the break.

The second half saw Shorter (14-5, 8-3 GSC) open up a 27-point lead after a 12-4 run with 14:29 left in the second half. West Georgia (7-12, 4-7 GSC) didn’t get closer than 15 points for the rest of the game.

Dedric Ware led all players in points (22) and assists (six).

Hill shot 4-for-7 from behind the arc to help fuel the 17-point night.

EMORY-OXFORD MEN 64,

GNTC 58

With the lead changing back-and-forth multiple times in the final 10 minutes of Saturday’s NJCAA Region XVII game with Emory-Oxford College, the Bobcats could not get a basket to fall in the final moments as the visiting Eagles came away with the win.

GNTC’s Alex Miller topped the school’s scoring record in the game with 646 points. Although he finished with only six points, it was enough to the break the record set by Kyle Wilson at 644 points.
