One-point wins are becoming the theme of the season for the Shorter women.

The Lady Hawks have won four straight conference games by that margin, including Thursday’s 59-58 victory over West Florida at the Winthrop-King Centre.

Supported by a game-high 19 points from Ieshia Alexander, the Lady Hawks withstood a rally from West Florida in the second half in the Gulf South Conference contest.

Shorter improved to 8-1 at home.

Alexander, a former star at Coosa, scored 14 points in the first half for Shorter (13-7, 8-4 GSC).

Alexander went 6-for-10 from the field in the opening half.

Alexander started off the scoring in the second half by connecting on a pair of free throws, followed by a Chelsi Matthews jumper to run the lead to 39-26 with 17:44 to play, establishing the largest lead of the night.

But West Florida (5-15, 2-10 GSC) went on a 13-0 run to tie it at 39-39.

Lindsey Crawford ended the run with a lay up.

The Lady Hawks got another well rounded game from Karisma Boykin.

She finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Former Model star Shelby Farrer scored nine points, while blocking two shots. She made two plays within the final minute to seal the home victory for the Lady Hawks.

With 35 seconds to play, Farrer connected on a jumper that put Shorter ahead by one point.

On the following trip down the court, Shorter was able to withstand a missed lay up by Johnson and an offensive rebound. Farrer stepped in front of Druding and draw the charge from the Argos center to force a turnover with five seconds to play.

Shorter was able to beat the press on the inbound pass and run out the remaining clock to keep West Florida winless on the road this season, 0-6.

The Lady Hawks went 13-for-19 from the free throw line, including going 8-for-10 in the second half.

Shorter hosts Valdosta State on Saturday.

Shorter’s hopes for a dramatic victory ended when a last-second 3-pointer rolled off the rim during Tuesday’s loss to West Florida.

“I really hurt for our team after that one,” said Shorter coach Chad Warner. “I felt like we put ourselves in a position to win the game but didn’t quite finish it off.”

Four Hawks scored in double digits: Walter Hill and Devance Harris scored 14 points each, Dedrick Ware added 13, and Brandon Pullman had 12.

Shorter (14-5, 8-3 GSC) opened up a 10-point first half lead when Walter Hill connectws on a 3-pointer to make the score 17-7 midway through the half.

Devance Harris scored 12 of his share of the team-high 14 before the intermission to enter halftime tied with West Florida (9-10, 4-7 GSC), 34-34.

Terrance Beasley was responsible for keeping the Argos in the game, scoring 15 first half points, part of a night where he would lead all scorers in the game with 24. Beasley was the second leading scorer for the Argos entering the game with an average of 14.8.

When the second half started, West Florida was able to use a 13-5 run to put an eight point margin on the Hawks.

With 4:03 left in the game, the lead was stretched to nine points. Fueled by six points from Brandon Pullman and four points from Kenny Leverette, the Hawks would be down by three with less than 30 seconds to play.

With the score 73-70, Dedric Ware found Hill for a 3-pointer that would tie the game with 23 seconds remaining.

Nate Johnson connected on a pair of free throws to put the Argos ahead by two. The inbound pass found Marquise King as he got off a shot just after crossing half court that circled the rim before falling no good as time expired.

Ware handed out 10 assists, the third time this season he has reached double digits in assists.

Shorter shot 42 percent from the field, compared to 53 percent for West Florida. West Florida connect3e on 73 percent of their free throws, 22-for-30, to help in the victory.

The Argos got 21 points from Ellis Young, the leading scorer on the season, along with a double-double from Johnson – 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Beasley shot 3-for-4 from behind the arc to help score his 24 points, while also being second on the team with nine rebounds.

West Florida commited 24 turnovers that the Hawks would convert into 30 points. The Hawks also took advantage of scoring from the bench, 11-5.

“We will work hard to prepare ourselves to play a very talented Valdosta team Saturday,” said Warner. “We will need a big crowd to help get us over the top!”

The Hawks remain at home this weekend, as Valdosta State visits the Winthrop-King Centre on Saturday.
