Jonathan Abrams scored 15 points and made crucial free throws in the closing minutes as the Berry College men posted their first road victory in almost two years by downing Hendrix, 63-60, in a Southern Athletic Association game on Sunday afternoon.

It was the first victory for the Vikings under interim head coach Derek Taylor, who took over the position when Jeff Haarlow resigned on Jan. 30.

Berry had gone 0-4 since that date prior to Sunday’s win.

Berry, which improved to 5-18 and 2-10 SAA, notched its first road win since Feb. 17, 2011, when the Vikings won at Truett McConnell, 77-73.

Abrams finished 5-of-13 from the field in Sunday’s game. He also made 5-of-7 free throws, including converting two foul shots to give the Vikings the 63-60 lead with 15 seconds remaining. Hendrix missed a 3-pointer on its final possession.

Mac Whalen added 12 points and Jake Wright contributed 11 for the Vikings.

“This was a great team effort tonight,” said Coach Taylor. “The guys followed our game plan and did everything I asked them to do. Mac (Whalen) and Jon were big down the stretch. ... I couldn’t be prouder of (the team).”

The Vikings host Millsaps on Friday at 8 p.m.
