A familiar face to Northwest Georgia lawmakers occupies the newest seat on the State Transportation Board.
Dalton businessman Roger Williams, who served 22 years in the state House of Representatives before retiring last year, was elected Tuesday as the 14th Congressional District representative on the board.
Due to last year’s redistricting, Floyd County was placed in the newly created 14th Congressional District, which led to a new transportation board member. Chattooga, Polk, Walker and Gordon are among the other 11 counties in the district.
State legislators who represent any part of the new district held a formal nomination period on Tuesday and Williams was the lone nominee.
“I’m honored that my friends and former colleagues in the General Assembly have the confidence in me to select me for this important post,” said Williams, who was nominated by state Rep. Tom Dickson, R-Cohutta.
“The things that make Northwest Georgia such a beautiful place to live and work are the same factors that give it such unique transportation challenges. I look forward to working with the Board and the Legislature to address those challenges,” Williams continued.
State Rep. Katie Dempsey, R-Rome, said Williams’ experience as a legislator and familiarity with the district will be invaluable. “As a former legislator, he has certainly worked in a regional and state-wide manner for many years, so I think he is going to be very engaged in the process as we move forward on transportation issues,” Dempsey said.
Dempsey said she spoke with Williams about the importance of the U.S. 411 Connector to the people of Rome and Floyd County.
She said plans are being set up for him to visit Rome as well as other cities in the district in the coming weeks.
“We will try to schedule that soon, so he can get to know local leaders and understand the transportation desires of our community,” Dempsey said.
