Stephanie Owens, who was the chief financial officer at Shorter University, is no longer employed at the school.

Dawn Tolbert, a spokesman for Shorter, would only confirm Owens’ status as an employee and would not discuss specifics.

The rumor mill has started. It seems Mrs Owens refused to "Cook The Books" to get the loan approved, which resulted in her termination. I'm sure if the "Powers That Be" look hard enough they will find a second set of books.

I find it interesting that Ms. Owens was fired and less than 24 hours later, Shorter announces the purchase of the Darlington property. Perhaps RN-T should do some follow-up on that angle.

My comments are not based on this specific situation. You complained and said something like this is just another example of "shorter bashing." If bashing Shorter wasn't justified I would stand up and say so, but in my opinion it is. I believe it is morally wrong to discriminate against another group of people. Some of the heads of Shorter think it is OK. It isn't.

Vincent, you believe it is morally wrong to discriminate against another group of people, but think it's OK to force a private university to associate with those with whom they do not wish to associate and employ them. I'll tell you what. Why don't I come over to your house every night and watch TV with you next week.

What? You say it's your house and you don't want me to come over? But Vincent, don't you realize that you're discriminating against me? It isn't fair.

Maybe I should stand outside your house protesting with a sign that says, "Vincent hates strangers." You know there is no other possible reason that you won't allow me to come over. It must be because you hate me; or else you're a xenophobe. Is that it?

Oh never mind. I'll just watch my TV. My pets love me. They'll watch TV with me.

dbeall,

I think you should reread my post. I don't believe I ever said anything about forcing Shorter to do anything. I understand that some people can't be criticized. And when someone hears something they don't want to hear they take it to an extreme.

And this isn't just another group of people. In my opinion it's a case of basic human rights. What if Shorter said they won't hire black people or Jewish people. I believe it is the same thing. This is not a moral issue. This is a human rights issue.

IGIT,

Shorter deserves to be bashed. Members of the board and of the administration made many poor decisions which will negatively impact the school. The decisions they've made are a disgrace to the school and to Rome and Floyd County. It gives Christians a bad name and I feel for everyone involved.

Bashing and "what they deserve" is alot to say without any facts, knowledge or insight of any kind of what really happened. Of course, thats the Christian thing to do and say I suppose. Such a double standard on what gives "Christians a bad name".

IGIT,

There was absolutely no need to share the news of Mrs. Owens no longer being at Shorter. This was just another way that for the authoritative figures at Shorter to embarass her. Way to go Shorter you must be so proud!

Guess it is another way to keep everyone in check and remind them who is always in charge. That does not seem very Christian to me!

Seems the paper shared it to thousands and thousands. I somehow think the call to "share" this news did not originate from Shorter. Just a tid bit to allow a long string of Shorter bashing without any details or facts whatsoever.

God has a plan for her life and He's got someone planned for Shorter college! All is well!

It is a terrible thing to think that being too honest, caring, and ethical could get you released at a "Christian" institution. However, this is exactly what happened to Mrs. Owens. She was probably the only one that could have saved Shorter fiscally. I think we just saw the last nail being driven into the coffin. Get luck Mrs. Owens, I am sure that you will be scooped up quickly by some company that can see how valuable you truly are.

Why is everyone assuming it was Shorter's decision? It may have been her decision, or a decision that Shorter had to make. When an employee is escorted out by security, everyone needs to wait and see, or better yet, mind their own business.

I am speechless and I continue to be amazed at the decision that are being made on the hill. The powers to be there only have loyalties to themselves. It is a shame what that place has become! Stephanie Owens was one of the smartest, honest, hardworking women I have ever known. She will be missed tremendously!

Without warning, she was met in her office at 8:00 Wednesday morning and escorted out of the building by security. She was one of the most honest and hard working people on The Hill and obviously knew too much of the truth.

Maybe she got caught drinking the same beverage Jesus drank. Forbidden at Shorter.

Perhaps she didn't hate gays enough.

There's a whole myriad of stuff that you could do to offend the Dowless version of the bible.

Who's taking her place?

Also, does anything know about why she left or where she's going next? Was this her choice or the administration's?

Thanks for any light you can shed.

Whether she left on her own, or whether she didn't is no one's business. I had a friend recently leave another college here in Rome, funny how I didn't see that in the paper. This is another tid bit to attract a long string of Shorter Bashing.

I see the Shorter organizational chart dated 1-23-2013 still lists Ms. Owens as CFO:
