SOME 200 BOY SCOUTS honed their map-reading and compass skills recently at Camp Sidney Dew in order to avoid teams of “zombies” waiting in the woods to, one assumes, eat their brains. Besides wondering whatever happened to the “bogeymen” who used to have a monopoly on that threatening role in childhood, perhaps there is a lesson in the current scary-stuff mentality that grips many younger minds and entertainment nowadays.

If this works so well, maybe it could be applied to solve problems in the classroom. Replace maps and compass talent with students turning homework in on time and making a passing grade on all tests at the risk of failure resulting in having zombies roaming the hallways eat their brains because otherwise those aren’t going to be good for much else.
