THE HAYS PRISONER who stabbed two correctional officers has pleaded guilty and had 70 years tacked onto the life sentence he was already serving. As it was explained, four counts of aggravated assault and one of attempted murder are not capital offenses so this was about as much as could be done and has the value, should his original murder conviction ever be overturned, of keeping the prisoner behind bars and the public safe.

Doesn’t do much for the future safety of the Chattooga County prison staff, does it? While Georgia likely has far too many prisons already, perhaps what is missing is an equivalent of the federal SuperMax facility in Colorado where they put terrorists and similar in single-cell lockup for 23 hours a day.
