Semi-pro Football: Spartans win season opener against Steam

The semi-pro Rome Spartans football team downed the Chattooga Steam, 12-6, on Saturday in the Spartans’ season opener at Coosa High.

After a 0-0 score at halftime, the Spartans scored first when Demonte Key ran back a fumble 34 yards for a score.

In the fourth quarter, Steven Leonard forced a fumble, setting up a 42-yard touchdown catch from Brisco Bingham to Jamie White.

Dayton Luther sealed the win with an interception with 1:23 left in the game.

The Spartans host the Gainesville Firebirds at Coosa High at 3 p.m. Saturday.
