CALHOUN— Fairmount, W.L. Swain and Tolbert elementary schools receive $3,000 each from a federal program that recognizes major academic progress.

The schools were named High-Progress Reward schools in October 2012, but the monetary award from the U.S. Department of Education was only recently announced. The funds may be used to buy additional materials for reading, math, social studies, and science instruction.

A High-Progress Reward School is a Title I school in the top 10 percent in the state in terms of improving the performance of all students in statewide assessments for a period of three years.
