WASHINGTON (AP) — A week before mandatory budget cuts go into effect across the government, the Department of Homeland Security has started releasing illegal immigrants being held in immigration jails across the country, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Tuesday.

Gillian Christensen, an ICE spokeswoman, said ICE has reviewed "several hundred cases" of immigrants being held in jails around the country and released them in the last week. They have been "placed on an appropriate, more cost-effective form of supervised release," she said.

Christensen said the agency's "priority for detention remains on serious criminal offenders and other individuals who pose a significant threat to public safety." She did not say how released immigrants were selected or what jails they were released from.

Tuesday's announcement of jail releases is the first tangible impact of the looming budget cuts for DHS.

The Obama administration has been issuing dire warnings about the impact of the sequestration and DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters at the White House Monday that across-the-board cuts would impact the department's core operations, including border security and airport screening operations.

She also warned that DHS might not be able to afford to keep the 34,000 immigration jail beds mandated by Congress.

"I don't think we can maintain the same level of security at all places around the country with sequester as without sequester," said Napolitano, adding that the impact would be "'like a rolling ball. It will keep growing."

According to the National Immigration Forum, it costs the government about $164 a day to keep an illegal immigrant facing deportation jailed. In a report on immigration detention costs last year the advocacy group said costs for supervised release can range from about 30 cents to $14 a day.

The administration asked for about $1.96 billion for immigration jail operations in the last budget. It amounts to about $5.4 million a day, according to the National Immigration Forum's report.

Christensen said Tuesday that released immigrants will still face deportation proceedings.

It would have been easier and cheaper to give them a one way airfare to Paris, France.

Countries like USA and Canada are in great demand by the citizens of third world nations and even the other nations too. For the people of such nations it is a dream to be in Canada. In spite of tight security at the borders, immigrants sneak into the country illegally.

After entering the nation they face challenges galore. Some of them have been mentioned below-

Medical facilities denied

Illegal immigrants are denied of any medical coverage by the government. Any illegal immigrant filing a case against any such issue loses the same as the Federal Court denies any support to such immigrants.

Approximately 40,000 to 50,000 illegal immigrants are reported in Canada. In case of any emergency the patient is admitted and then he is asked to submit their provincial card number. In absence of this document, they are asked for private insurance and then a credit card.

In case none of the above mentioned documents are submitted by the immigrants then the department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada is informed and finally the person is deported from the nation.

Jobs denied

The illegal immigrants in Canada are denied of a job of good status. Most of the time they are found to be taking up jobs which are not proportionate to their skill or education. In order to survive they have to take up any job coming their way so that they can earn their living.

There are examples when an academician has to take up a job of a security to guard to support himself and his family.

School Admission denied

Children of illegal immigrants face a social trauma too. They are denied admission to government run schools as the parent is expected to submit Social Identification Number before admitting his child.

The private schools may offer them admission as the rules made by the private schools are formulated by them only. If a parent can afford the fee of a school, his child may be admitted to school but the sole discretion would be taken by the school authority.

Social Acceptance denied

Illegal immigrants might face a rejection from their neighbours and peers when people come to know about their illegitimate stay in the nation.

Illegal Immigrants face problems from all ends when they stay in a country beyond the legal regulations.

Though I agree that illegal immigrants do not deserve what they get, comparing Canada is ludicrous.

Medical Facilities Denied - Social medicine. Not the same...

Jobs Denied - if your statement is true, then the reverse must be true and you are stating that illegal immigrant doctors come here and practice their trade in America as well? Surely you don't believe that. Same story here. Illegal immigrant professors become garbage men here as well.

School Admission Denied - University is FREE in Canada. Not the same ballpark...

Social Acceptance Denied - ummm, yeah. Here too.

Kinda silly way to drive your point home. Pick a country to compare that does not pay for their citizens to be healthy and educated as a right of citizenship.

CryBabyLiberal-I'm mad that Georgia Farmers lost $350 million in Produce in one year..... Not enough white folk in the state that would pick them maters. The white folk were too busy yelling at the conservative Immigrants (who were paying into a system and receiving minimal benefit, and paying cash tour small businesses) to get out, while Obama was winning what should have been an unwinnable election..... With their conservative vote.

BTW, how are those $8 buck and hour jobs at Lowes working out for you renters? (Notice I did not ask that question in Spanish because I assume white folk will get those jobs since they claim thy pay all the bills).......

Why not do like all other countries and release them back where they came from until their appeal is heard? If they win their appeal, they can come back to the United States.

They have more money to spend than they did last year, just not as much more as they thought they would have if the sequester is implemented. There is NO way they have to release anyone. This is just a stunt at the expense of public safety for the fool in charge of the country to grandstand for the ignorant uninformed people that don't have a clue. He will create long lines at the airports, close public parks, withhold vaccines, etc. to get make a point that the uniformed and ignorant will buy into. All agencies get more money every year than they had last year. The increase in spending never stops. All the sequester does is reduce the rate of increase. It does not decrease spending over last year's spending and does virtually nothing to curb the deficit or debt increase but it's a small start.

The senate had a bill from the house to allow the president to cut spending in a way that would have the least effect on the public but they ignored the bill as usual, point fingers, and grandstand for people that don't know what is going on and never will until it's too late.

Obama has asked that tax loopholes be closed in exchange for spending cuts. The very nature of the word "loophole" says that it should be done regardless. Immigration loopholes that get exploited are closed, and rightfully so.

The house bill included zero tax revenue or loop hole closings. Presenting it was just a publicity show, just as Obama's phone call to the House was a publicity stunt.

Stopping the exploitation of tax law in exchange for spending cuts. Not a lot to ask for. America as a whole agrees...quite an extensive poll was released just yesterday to support this.

Way to go, Mr. President. We're so proud of you!

At least our priorities are in order. First thing to cut is national security. We'll cut obamaphones, checks for ne'er-do-wells, funding for PBS, planned parenthood-abortions, and Obama's golf trips next year, if things get tight enough.

I get the cynicism. However, what is the issue with PBS funding? That includes NPR if I'm not mistaken, and it's about the only intelligent thing on the radio nowadays if you don't have XM radio.

I'm admittedly ignorant on the subject, and want to know the stance against.

How many US citizens are held in Canada or Mexico for being in those countries illegally?

None, unless they broke their laws by trying to get in a second time after being deported for their first offense of entering their country illegally.

In that case they serve a jail term in some really bad conditions so maybe they won't try a third time in which case they are executed on the spot in Mexico or put in an ice box if caught a third time in Canada.
