Walker Borneman finished with two hits and two RBIs for Shorter (1-11), and Michael Miranda added three hits in the loss.
Shorter scored its first run in the fourth when Jesse Gavigan scored on a bases loaded error with two outs.
Miranda got a one-out double in the fifth before scoring on an error to bring Shorter within 4-2.
Borneman picked up a two-run double with two outs in the seventh to score Willie Lewis and Miranda to tie the game.
But Columbus State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Shorter finished with eight hits, and committed two errors.
Ben Stell started on the mound for the Hawks. In his two innings of work he gave up five hits and four runs while recording a strike out. David Summerall came in from the bullpen to pitch six innings of five hit baseball, striking out five while giving up three runs.
Columbus State scored seven times on ten hits, while committing four errors. Three different players recorded multiple hits, while leadoff batter Ryan Lewis scored twice.
Bronson Gagner pitched the eighth inning to pick up the win, striking out one.
The Hawks are back in action this weekend with a three game series versus Gulf South Conference foe North Alabama from Florence, Ala.
