ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — The public television and radio stations operated by the University of Georgia plan to add local news broadcasts.

Starting March 4, WUGA-FM plans to add seven local afternoon newscasts to its existing daily morning broadcasts. That will effectively double the number newscasts the station airs that are focused on events and issues in Athens and northeast Georgia.

Starting March 11, WUGA-TV will air seven local news broadcasts in the afternoons and evenings on weekdays. The university says the station is the only north Georgia television station that has local TV news coverage that is broadcast exclusively for viewers in the northeastern part of the state that includes Athens, Gainesville and Toccoa.

WUGA-TV and WUGA-FM are operated by the University of Georgia in partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting.
