Former Rome High star Stephen Gaylor drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded groundout in the eighth inning on Thursday to help the Berry baseball team beat Sewanee, 10-9.

The play allowed Dusty Tyson to score the tiebreaking run, and Berry held on for the Southern Athletic Association victory.

Berry improved to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in SAA games. Sewanee fell to 4-6 and 0-4.

After Sewanee tagged Berry starting pitcher Casey Gray for eight runs in six innings, the score was 8-3 going into the bottom of the sixth.

Berry’s Will Heard hit an RBI double, and Tyson dropped in a two-run double into shallow centerfield to cut Sewanee’s edge to 8-7 in the sixth.

With the score still the same, Gaylor stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases full in the eighth.

He grounded out to shortstop, and two errors later ended up on third, which sent pinch runner Kevin Scott, Tyson and Neely each across the plate.

Christian Champion worked around an unearned run to nail down the win for Berry, striking out Brett Polsto with a man on to earn the save, his second in as many games. Danny Parry (2-0) picked up the win and pitched two-third scoreless innings.

Marshall Ussery (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Sewanee after surrendering two runs (both unearned) and two walks in a third of an inning.

Tyson scored three runs and drove in two for Berry, and Neely and Zach Famer each had two hits on the afternoon. Ben Clune notched three hits for Sewanee, and Allen Thigpen recorded two hits and three RBIs.

Berry and Sewanee will complete their three-game series today with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
