Darlington School will host a blood drive on Thursday, March 21, in honor of senior Sam Mathis, who has been in and out of the hospital for the past several weeks after being diagnosed with a gastrointestinal disorder he has apparently had since birth.

The Blood Assurance Blood Vessel will be at the McCallie-Kennedy Library steps that day from 2 to 7 p.m. for anyone who would like to participate in the blood drive. Look for a sign-up table during lunch beginning on Tuesday, March 12.

“It is always so meaningful when an event such as this one is held in honor of one of our own,” said Reba Barnes, director of servant leadership at Darlington. “Sam is a fine young man who has been so very courageous. As a school community, we want to support him.”

Mathis was admitted to the hospital early this year and has already undergone emergency surgery to treat his health issues. Right before spring break, he was discharged but soon ended up back in the hospital. He has since developed blood clots in his right arm and it is possible that he will need additional surgery. However, more testing must be done before a determination is made.

"Sam has been extremely brave throughout this entire process," said Jean Bonnyman, Mathis' adviser. "He has been stoically living in pain for some time. Since the initial surgery, he has seen some improvements; however, he is frequently in a great deal of pain. He and his mother very much appreciate everyone who has reached out and visited. This is one young man in need of our prayers and support."

Sam is the son of Paula Mathis of Rome. Those wishing to give blood in his honor must be 16 years or older; 16-year-olds must have written consent from a parent or guardian. If you have questions, please contact Lea Duncan at LDuncan@darlingtonschool.org.
