A man who allegedly assaulted a young girl and then threatened to stab himself in the throat was taken into custody by Cartersville police early Wednesday morning, according to Cartersville police reports.

According to the reports:

James Daniel Wallace, 41, of Cartersville, barricaded himself in the basement bathroom of a Nickolas Street home after police responded to a call of a female getting tased at the residence.

With Wallace sitting against the door to keep anyone from entering the bathroom, he told responding officers that he had a knife, and if anyone attempted to come in he would stab himself in the throat.

After several attempts to get the suspect to slide the knife under the door failed, officers sprayed pepper spray under the door and then forced their way in when Wallace began to react to the spray.

The suspect struggled with officers and was tased before dropping the knife and being taken into custody.

Wallace was taken to Cartersville Medical Center for treatment of self-inflicted cuts on his neck and left chest sustained during the struggle with officers and for mental evaluation.

He is charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, sexual battery, false imprisonment and three counts of obstruction of a police officer.

Bartow County authorities had no information Wednesday night on Wallace’s status.
