Members of the 2013 Rome-Floyd SPLOST Citizen Committee will conduct their first meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room on the second floor of the Floyd County Administration Building, 12 E. 4th Ave.
The meeting is open to the public and the agenda includes reviewing the general procedures and functions of the panel.
“We want everybody on same page to make sure that the process can move forward and that everyone gets to know each other,” Floyd County Commissioner Rhonda Wallace said.
Wallace is the county’s representative to the SPLOST Committee while Rome Mayor Evie McNiece serves at the city’s representative.
Neither of the two elected leaders is considered a member of the committee, and they will not have a vote on any decisions but will be there for information purposes.
“This is a very important committee,” McNiece said of the group made up of residents from Rome, Floyd County and Cave Spring. “In the past, the citizen committee has been very instrumental in helping to look at the projects submitted for approval and educating the public on the final list that is created.”
The committee will hear proposals, work to create a recommended list of projects to be funded by the proposed 1-cent special purpose, local option sales tax, and then submit it for approval by city and county governments.
City and county officials would have the final say on the package, which is slated to be finalized in September and put to a vote in the Nov. 5 general election. The 2009 SPLOST collection will end June 30.
The members of the committee were appointed by the three municipalities in the county from a list of applicants. Floyd County has six members, Rome has four and Cave Spring has one.
David Newby, general manager for Profile Extrusion Co. in Rome, is the group’s chairman, which is a joint appointment by both the city and county commissions.
Committee members will be given the form that must be filled out in order for a project to be considered for SPLOST funding. They will be accepting them at future meetings to begin the process of developing the list of projects.
Wallace said she anticipates the committee to meet regularly but that an exact schedule would be discussed tonight.
“We want to have the list and the costs associated with each project done by the first of summer,” Wallace said.
Both Wallace and McNiece said they are excited to see the process continue towards a new SPLOST.
“It seems like it is going to be a great group of people and I look forward to having the opportunity of working with each one of them,” Wallace said.
