Floyd County’s initial claims for unemployment claims dropped by 65 percent from January to February and by 15 percent compared to February 2012.
Floyd County had 528 initial unemployment claims in February, compared with 1,529 in January and 621 in February 2012.
Also, according to Georgia Department of Labor statistics, the Floyd County area gained 400 jobs in February when compared with the same month last year, with 38,500 working this February.
First-time unemployment claims were down from month to month and year to year in every county the Coosa Valley area.
Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipped to 8.6 percent in February, the lowest rate since January 2009. The rate was down one-tenth of a percentage point from 8.7 percent in January and six-tenths of a percentage point from 9.2 percent in February a year ago.
“The unemployment rate is the lowest it’s been in more than four years, and I give the credit to Georgia employers who continue to create jobs and lay off fewer workers,” said State Labor Commission Mark Butler. “In fact, there were fewer workers laid-off and filing first-time claims for unemployment insurance in February than since before the beginning for the Great Recession in 2007.”
