Families were out early at Ridge Ferry Park this afternoon as gates opened for Rome’s celebration of the Fouth of July.

Some like Sarah and Keith Williams said they decided to come out early to let their six-year-old granddaughter Taryn play on the water slides.

Taryn said she was enjoying the holiday so far out in the afternoon sun.

“It’s awesome,” she said. “I like riding the water slide because I get to get all wet.”

Sarah Williams said the family hadn’t yet picked out a spot for tonight’s fireworks display taking place at the park starting at 9:15 p.m.

She added she felt Independence Day was especially important to their family since her son Joshua Williams was currently serving with the United States Marines.

Debby and Roy Parker brought along their grandchildren early as well for the day’s celebrations.

“We came just to be the crowds and let the boys play,” she said.

Celebrations in the park today continue with inflatable water slides, moon bounces, concessions and live music beginning at 5 p.m.

Parking and event admission is free, but it is recommended people bring lawn chairs for their own seating.
