The Armuchee Indians were crowned subregion champs Friday night, but they didn’t feel like celebrating.

Surrendering a touchdown on the game’s final play, the Indians lost to Rockmart, 7-6, in a Region 7-AA South thriller at Armuchee.

Rockmart’s Roshmel Young hooked up with Terian Beavers on a one-yard scoring pass on the final snap, and Joseph Lockley connected on the extra point to give the Jackets the win — and end Armuchee’s bid for an undefeated run through the subregion.

On the upside for the Indians, they still earned the South subregion title by virtue of Pepperell’s 34-0 win over Model. (The Dragons’ victory created a three-way tie for first place, and Armuchee owned the tie-breaker over the other two co-leaders, Rockmart and Pepperell).

Meanwhile, two additional local teams — Calhoun and Darlington — also claimed titles Friday night. But they did it in more satisfying style: With victories.

At Darlington, the Tigers used a strong second half to down Gordon Lee, 23-7, and clinch the 6-A crown. The victory completed an amazing turn-around for the Tigers, who have now won six straight games after opening the season 0-3.

In Calhoun, the top-ranked Jackets rolled past Adairsville, 34-0, to claim the 7-AA North championship. It was the Jackets’ 67th consecutive win against region/subregion oppo-nents.

Also earning wins in Week 10 were the Chat-tooga Indians (who knocked off Dade County, 20-14), the Coosa Eagles (who beat Temple, 40-12) and the Sonoraville Phoenix (who downed county rival Gordon Central, 35-6).

The news wasn’t as good for Unity Christian, which fell to the NCC Crusaders, 48-0, in the opening round of the playoffs. The loss ended the Lions’ first season of varsity football.

Next week, numerous teams in the local area will be involved in “region playoff games.”

The 7-AA championship game will have top-ranked Calhoun hosting Armuchee, with the win-ner earning a No. 1 seed for the state playoffs, and the loser taking a No. 2 seed into the postseason. Both teams will host opening-round state playoff games.

Also next week, Adairsville will host Pepperell and Rockmart will visit Chattooga. The winners of those two games will secure berths in the playoffs.
