MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — Known by the sundry names of rickshaw, bike taxi and pedicab, the three-wheeled passenger bike service is coming to Marietta this spring.

Cassandra Buckalew, who brought the city the Historic Marietta Trolley Company last year, is branching out into the pedicab service.

"It just felt like a natural extension of the trolley," she said.

Buckalew envisions the pedicabs being used by employees and visitors of WellStar Kennestone Hospital, people who want to lunch on Marietta Square, or a couple attending a theater performance who don't want to walk from the parking lot.

Travelers will be able to flag them down for a ride or call to be picked and dropped off for a fee of $2 to $7, depending on the destination.

City Councilman Van Pearlberg, who lives off Church Street, looks forward to the service.

"It sounds like a nice way to get to the Square," Pearlberg said.

Pearlberg and his wife, Patti, have traveled in pedicabs in Manhattan.

"It's a very nice way to see the scenery and at the same time not walk," Pearlberg said.

The pedicabs are human-powered but have an electric boost for hills. Decatur, Savannah and Charleston are among other southeast cities that have pedicabs.

"Pedicabs will provide more in-depth tours around the Square, which will allow visitors to focus more on the buildings than they'd be able to on the trolley or driving in their car," Buckalew said.

Mayor Bill Dunaway has high praise for Buckalew and her husband, Brian.

"I think the world of the Buckalews. It's nice to have people around who believe so much in Marietta," Dunaway said.

Dunaway said the trolley tours have been a "wonderful asset that draws people to Marietta" and he's pleased to see the couple add the attraction.

Buckalew is a Mableton native and attended the Art Institute of Atlanta. Her husband, Brian, a graduate of Walton High and Kennesaw State University, is an account executive for Majestic Steel in east Cobb. The couple enjoys the Square so much they moved into the Manget townhouse development earlier this year.
