Musicians are ready to Rock Rome for RACA this Thursday night in a benefit concert at 333 on Broad for the
Rome Area Council for the Arts. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will continue until 1:30 a.m. There is a $10 cover charge at the door, according to Broad and Third band member and concert organizer Lisa Smith.
Drink specials will also be featured at 333 on Broad for the benefit.
Smith said Broad and Third will come on near the end of the lineup, which will showcase plenty of good bands throughout the night.
Those include acoustic offerings from the Rome Area Songwriters and John Schroeder, along with Blue Train and Peachtree Station. Smith said the bands performing in the concert are donating their time to the fundraising effort.
“We want to bring a big crowd out, and have something for everybody,” she said. “So we’re encouraging people to come out and help RACA, especially people who have not heard some of these groups play.”
RACA executive director Rebecca Koontz said the organization’s landlord, Hal Ruland, a drummer and vocalist in Broad and Third, came up with the idea but Smith did the bulk of the work.
“Without Lisa Smith on board, this wouldn’t have been what it is,” she said.
Koontz is hoping for a good crowd to generate needed funds to help with RACA’s administrative costs and programs.
“January and February are lean months for nonprofits, especially in this economy,” she said. “We had a fabulous November and December in our consignment gallery, which has helped us.”
Broad and Third, which Ruland and Smith formed in September 2008, also features Tom and Mike Beck, Becky McCord and Ed Hunt. Smith said the band plays covers from artists such as Linda Ronstadt and The Steve Miller Band.
“We’ve got a lot of talented vocalists in the band, so we can do a variety of songs,” she said.
