Student achievement was the main focus of the Rome Board of Education meeting Tuesday night as board members recognized more than a dozen students for recent accomplishments.

Six elementary school students were presented with certificates after being selected as winners in an art contest sponsored by the Chieftains Museum. Each student also received small gifts and four passes to the museum for the prize-winning portraits of the Chieftain House. Additionally, the Chiaha Arts and Crafts Guild donated $50 for art supplies to each participating school.

The winners were: Jajuan Hunter and Asha Alaji-Sharif from Anna K. Davie; Jaden Roberts from Southeast; and Christen Sarge, Autumn Fortenberry and Edward Martinez from West End.

Two state champion wrestlers from Rome High School were recognized during the meeting. Emanuel Kerr-Brown is a two-time state champ in the 135-pound weight class, and the RHS senior is headed to Duke University to pursue his education and wrestling career. Also, Rome High junior Randy Roden was crowned state champ after an undefeated season.

In other student achievement-related business, the BOE:

  • Recognized Georgia Power for its recent $2,400 contribution to Rome High’s Advanced Placement calculus seminar. The program takes AP students to Georgia Tech, where they learn college level calculus and get a taste of college life.

  • Heard a report from Director of Curriculum Debbie Downer about Focused Instructional Walks. The walks describe a way in which principals and teachers can evaluate how well students are learning with the standards-based curriculum.
