The Appalachian Grill — which had been slated for development in the Cotton Block’s historic Joe Robbins Furniture building — is not coming to town after all, developer Jimmy Kelley announced this morning at a Downtown Development Authority meeting.

According to Kelley, the property will still be developed by local investment group QuarterTon Inc., though Appalachian Grill owners Jackie and Andrea Wallace will not be part of the plans. “I think the delays made them feel like it hurt them,” Kelley said. “As delays continued, (the Wallaces’) interests waned.”

The restaurant was originally set to open in fall 2005, but the project hit a number of delays, including a change in the renovation plans for the building and the need for government approval including that of Rome’s Historic Preservation Commission.
