For most, the idea of running a mile and eating a dozen donuts before running another mile has little appeal. But for one of Berry College’s student organizations, Athletes Bettering the Community (ABC), that is just the type of challenge they wanted to bring to campus this year. The race will take place today at Berry College.

ABC was started in 2000 when a group of Berry student-athletes came together and founded the organization aimed at making an impact in the Rome-Floyd County area. The race they are putting on consists of running one mile, then stopping at a designated eating area and eating 12 Krispy Kreme doughnuts, then running another mile.

ABC will host the “Krispy Kreme Challenge” today as a way to raise money for the Fugees Family. The Fugees Family is a non-profit organization based in Clarkston, that works with child survivors of war from all over the world.

The beginnings of the Krispy Kreme Challenge were born in December 2004 as a dare between a few North Carolina State University undergraduate students. The first race took place that same year with just 12 participants. The race is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. today in front of the Cage Center.
