“We need to clean our city up,” said Commissioner Bill Collins during a planning retreat where much focus regarding this was directed toward downtown Broad Street — putting art displays in 20-plus empty storefronts, fixing cracked windows, removing chewing-gum blobs, doing something about the long-irritating boarded-up and weed-eaten corner of the Cotton Block ... replacing gravel-pit sidewalks?
Darn tootin’! But the commissioners also need to drive about in residential areas off main thoroughfares where some great ready-to-shoot movie sets can be found for a remake of “Tobacco Road” — blocks of them. South Rome is starting to look good compared to far too many places in town. If city officials need a guide, just ask the chamber of commerce folks where they would never, ever take an economic prospect.
