It’s going to take more than a little rain to dampen the spirits of some of the world’s top junior golfers this week.

Scattered rain showers moved across Rome on Monday, but the Burgett H. Mooney Jr. Rome Classic Junior-Am went off without a hitch, and the golfers competing in the tournament were able to get a feel for the course by playing a practice round.

Coosa Country Club golf pro Brian Albertson said the tournament is scheduled to tee off this morning, and they’ll deal with any weather problems as they come.

“Well just try to tee off at 7:30 as scheduled,” said Albertson. “If there’s too much rain where the greens become unputtable or something like that than we would push things back.”

“For the most part, it would take a lot of rain to postpone an event.”

Albertson said there is one thing that could interfere with tournament play.

“Lightning’s a different story,” he said. “That would definitely cause some suspensions.”

The weather forecast calls for showers in the early morning hours, followed by scattered thunderstorms into the afternoon.

But, right now, the focus is on the tournament.

“Everyone had a great day,” said Albertson. “The Junior-Am this morning went very well. We had a great time. We had a great turnout. All of our local area supporters had a good time.”

The tournament features six players from the Greater Rome area. The three girls competing are Peyton Albertson, Hannah Mae Deems and Maggie Ashmore. The boys competing are Mark Kim, Jonathan Mason and Matt Littanzi.
