MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — An Atlanta suburb plans to add a $3.25 fee to utility bills for customers who use a credit card.

The Marietta Daily Journal reports that the Marietta Board of Lights and Water wants to require the fee for residential customers paying with credit cards. Officials say they also plan to eliminate credit card transactions for commercial customers altogether.

The seven-member board made the change Monday in a 7-0 vote. The City Council must adopt the change at its Wednesday meeting for the new policy to become official.

Bob Lewis, general manager of the city-owned utility, says banks that process the credit card payments charge transaction fees. Lewis said credit card transaction fees have risen for the city's utility from $300,000 to $700,000 over the past four years.

I thought so too. That doesn't seem right. I had an issue with a business in the mall doing that to me. They added a .50 charge to my debit card (without telling me I might add). When I got my statement, I called the store. They told me that they do that for transactions made on the weekends (???) I told them I wanted the charge removed. They refused so I called the Better Business Bureau, the mall office and the local police. It was only .50 but it was the principle of the thing. I got my .50 and I never used that store again. We have to make a stand against these little nickel and dime charges. In today's economy, I need every nickel and dime I make. Don't the utility companies get enough of our money already?

I thought it was illegal to charge someone extra if they use a credit/debit card. Most merchant accounts will cancel the account if they find out it is happening. With the exception of small charges less than $10 or $15.
