COVINGTON, Ga. — The Newton County sheriff's office says the body of a 17-year-old who had disappeared while swimming has been found in the Alcovy River.

Sheriff's office spokesman Anthony Washington says the body of Bernardo "Alex" Rosas was recovered Thursday afternoon near an embankment. He had disappeared Wednesday while he was swimming with friends.

A friend of the victim, 18-year-old Sammy Mullinax Jr., says he tried to rescue Rosas when he saw him go under but was unable to pull him out in the strong current.

Washington says the water in that part of the river is shallow in some portions but can drop off, and that some of it is very deep.
