Rock and blues and a little bit of soul — that’s what Rome residents will get when Athens based Futurebirds try to bring down the house with a little help from local band Muletide Perkins Trio on June 15 at the DeSoto Theatre.

Organizers hope the charm of the historic theater and the musical magic both bands bring to the stage will make for an exciting concert.

The Futurebirds — Payton Bradford, Thomas Johnson, Carter King, Dennis Love, Brannen Miles and Daniel Womack — have played Rome before and certainly have a large fanbase here. They’re coming off an exciting 2011 which saw them release two well-received EPs and criss-crossed the country with such bands as Widespread Panic, Drive-By Truckers, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and the Grass Giraffes.

The also played big gigs such as Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits.

Bradford, the band’s drummer, grew up in Rome.

Opening for the Futurebirds is local band Muletide Perkins Trio. The group is made up of Bryan Mullins (aka Muletide) on guitar, Matt McGinnis (aka Hardup McGizzle) on bass, and Graham Duke (aka Old Burnt Turn Slick) on drums. While their songs can be light hearted and silly, they are serious about their craft and are working on releasing a second album this summer.

They play original music influenced by country, rock, punk and whatever else they can throw on the plate, which is why they like to call it slop rock. Their debut album, “Slop Right Out the Trough,” has gained them a small but tight regional fan base and has earned rotation on college radio in Athens, Atlanta, and Chattanooga.

“We’re looking forward to teaming up with Futurebirds again,” Mullins said. “We’ve played with them periodically over the last 4 or 5 years and it’s a blast every time. They really bring it to the stage and off the stage they are hilarious. They’re really packing them in now. They’ve been working really hard.”

Mullins said the trio is also excited about playing the DeSoto and partnering with the event’s producer, Appalachian Entertainment.

“We’ve had the opportunity to play there before and it’s such a great place. I love it,” Mullins said. “I’m also very excited about Appalachian Entertainment. They’re really excited about hosting some memorable events and I’m looking forward to finding out what they’ve got in store.”

The concert takes place June 15 at the DeSoto Theatre, 530 Broad St. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music begins at 8:45 with Muletide Perkins Trio taking the stage followed by the Futurebirds. The show is for those 18 years of age and up.
