There are idiots, and then there are idiotic statements. Leonard Pitts is no idiot. He may have been idiotic to say the Tea Party is largely racially motivated, but he has also made some pretty trenchant observations about American society over the years. He also gets tons of racial hate mail for his columns -- this has been well documented -- so I wouldn't get too irritated about his sensitivity to these matters. He knows how racism sounds.
