The city council in Winder recently agreed to hold public hearings on allowing homeowners to keep up to 10 chickens. The measure was pushed by Winder resident Nicola Gleaton, who was cited by the city last year for illegally keeping a flock in his yard.
The ban on chickens in residential and commercial neighborhoods has been in place for years, though town officials say it is seldom enforced.
Some residents have expressed concerns that allowing chickens will drive down property values.
The public hearings on lifting the ban have not yet been scheduled.
