Some interesting statistics on teen mothers, several of which seem to be playing out in this scenario:
- 2/3 of teen moms are poor.
- 1/2 of children born to teen moms fail a grade
- daughters of teen moms are THREE times more likely to become teen moms themselves
- boys born to teen mothers are TWO times more likely to end up in prison
Our school systems need to be mentioning these things, as do parents. Education is the best chance we have at preventing these things from happening. It's disgusting how little so many teenagers know about preventing pregnancy and because of what, their parents wanting their children to remain naive? Teens are going to have sex whether you like it or not. It's best to educate them on how to be safe so you don't have another girl end up on 16 and Pregnant...
The worst part of all of this though? The fact that these children aren't being thought of. Instead you have young girls wanting to play mommy until daddy exits the picture and they realize how much it actually takes raise a child, both emotionally and financially. Why parents aren't explaining what childcare is actually like to their children, I do not know (not that teenagers can comprehend it 100% but it's a start...). Here are some figures from 2010 that every person considering children should know, teens and adults alike:
- the average cost of prenatal care is between $1,500 and $3,000
- the average cost of baby food for one year is $672
- the average cost of disposable diapers for one year is $1,152 (if you go by the average figure that one month = 320 diapers)
- the average cost to raise a baby for the first year is $10,115 (this includes food, prenatal care, follow visits, vaccines, etc. and does NOT include housing, toys, and so on)
- the average hospital birth (without insurance) costs roughly $10,000 and up to $20,000 if a c-section is performed
And so on...
Besides, if Whitney wasn't fond of the spotlight to some extent, she never would have appeared on a show that airs on MTV, one of the most watched cable channels in the world (and not just the U.S.). She would be naive to think her name would never get brought up again, even if it's because of something a relative did.
And to make it worse not only is she a grandmother but she has a baby that is only a few days older than her grandchild b/c she was pregnant at the same time as her daughter on the show. Way to go there April you should win worst mother of the decade!
