You know what's sad? This girl whose mom used to babysit me, she was a year older than me. We were in the same Middle School and then I moved before high school started. Anyhow, I got back in touch with her and her family on FB. She became a mom at 18. And now she's 36, and her daughter just had a baby. She's a year older than me and a granny. I just had my first and only kid close to 32 yrs old.

cavespringdave, I definitely agree with you that this woman obviously shouldn't win mother of the year but I don't think anyone "lets" their child get pregnant at 15. Then again I'm sure she didn't really care much about instilling the concept of contraceptives in her daughter because she's out using heavy narcotics, getting arrested, and STILL reproducing like an idiot... CPS should take her baby away and place it in a suitable home that isn't chock full of drug use, teen pregnancy, etc.

Some interesting statistics on teen mothers, several of which seem to be playing out in this scenario:

- 2/3 of teen moms are poor.

- 1/2 of children born to teen moms fail a grade

- daughters of teen moms are THREE times more likely to become teen moms themselves

- boys born to teen mothers are TWO times more likely to end up in prison

Our school systems need to be mentioning these things, as do parents. Education is the best chance we have at preventing these things from happening. It's disgusting how little so many teenagers know about preventing pregnancy and because of what, their parents wanting their children to remain naive? Teens are going to have sex whether you like it or not. It's best to educate them on how to be safe so you don't have another girl end up on 16 and Pregnant...

The worst part of all of this though? The fact that these children aren't being thought of. Instead you have young girls wanting to play mommy until daddy exits the picture and they realize how much it actually takes raise a child, both emotionally and financially. Why parents aren't explaining what childcare is actually like to their children, I do not know (not that teenagers can comprehend it 100% but it's a start...). Here are some figures from 2010 that every person considering children should know, teens and adults alike:

- the average cost of prenatal care is between $1,500 and $3,000

- the average cost of baby food for one year is $672

- the average cost of disposable diapers for one year is $1,152 (if you go by the average figure that one month = 320 diapers)

- the average cost to raise a baby for the first year is $10,115 (this includes food, prenatal care, follow visits, vaccines, etc. and does NOT include housing, toys, and so on)

- the average hospital birth (without insurance) costs roughly $10,000 and up to $20,000 if a c-section is performed

And so on...

I agree with you on every point, but I do want to mention you can only educate students who are willing to listen. Birth control is a huge HUGE issue and no one wants to believe that their child is sexually active and refuse to allow them to use birth control, thus resulting in teenage pregnancies. Of course we teach abstinence only and we all see how well that is working out for the United States.

Many of these Teen Moms who feel they are doing well for their kids are doing so with the help of Government assistance. If you require government assistance to put food on your table, don't think YOU'RE doing a great job. It's the taxpayers who are footing your bill because you were too lazy to use contraceptives.

dm999, do you expect the RNT to not cover news simply because the daughter of a woman who was arrested has supposedly done well for herself? Sorry, but this Whitney girl and her mother are two separate entities and as such, if one of them breaks the law, they're going to get an article written about them just like anyone else does in Floyd county.

Besides, if Whitney wasn't fond of the spotlight to some extent, she never would have appeared on a show that airs on MTV, one of the most watched cable channels in the world (and not just the U.S.). She would be naive to think her name would never get brought up again, even if it's because of something a relative did.

I think these MTV shows on teenage pregnancy are disgusting!!!! I would imagine some girls are deliberately getting pregnant so that they might get on one of these shows. I am the mother of a 10 year old daughter. At my house we do not watch these sad shows, nor do we watch "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" or "Pretty Little Liars." The even most disgusting part of all is that these shows I just mentioned are on the FAMILY CHANNEL! They have turned teenage sin and stupidity into entertainment!!! Shame on the Family Channel and MTV!!!

I think the person that wrote this article is pretty sorry for being the young lady into this. Whitney is doing very well for herself and did not need her name plaster all over the paper. True she did go on MTV but the was her choice this was not. Maybe if the writer of this article gets into trouble they will bring members of their family into to make is sound better.

@cavespringdave

And to make it worse not only is she a grandmother but she has a baby that is only a few days older than her grandchild b/c she was pregnant at the same time as her daughter on the show. Way to go there April you should win worst mother of the decade!
