I AM A junior pursuing a business degree at Shorter University. Over the past two and a half years, I have learned what the true meaning of a leader should be.

First, he should be one that knows how to communicate not only his employees, but also his customers. This puts him in a place to verbalize exactly what direction he wants to move in and be able to do it effectively. However, at the same time you must be listening to your customer base and hearing what they think about your product or service.

Second, a leader must give opportunity to employees, as well as customers, to express their concern.

He can’t do this through private meetings with each and every one of them. This puts people in a place of fear, that if they speak up in a closed door meeting, what they have to said maybe misquoted. That is why it is so important for a leader, such as a college president, to have a public forum. This allows for all parties to hear the exact same thing and get everything on the table.

Third, if a president isn’t capable of or will to be put in a public setting to defend his policy, he has no business being in that position. The president and board of Shorter University should welcome the opportunity to defend their new policy before the faculty and students.

So all of this is simply to say, Dr. Dowless, if you can’t handle the heat get out of our school.

These are some interest comments here between the Romans and the Barbarians(Alabamians.) I have posted some strong changes to SS's mandate made 4 days ago. They are further down in the comment section and they are essential for the success of this mission: TO Restore Shorter to a Respected Level of Full Appreiation in Academia and in Christian Education. Remember the rules of St. Francis, "Full Respect and allegiance (Obedience, even.) to those God has placed over us. Benedict's rules were even more severe. See the new Revised version of Baptist polity, down below Saved and Sanctified's post of reccomendations.

Proof read please. You diminish your point when you can't take the time to make sure your article reads properly.

Aside from that I mostly agree with you.

JohnDoeson- Please don't trivialize the torture and murder that took place under the Nazi regime by comparing it to an unpopular policy being implemented at a private university. I understand the point you are trying to make, but your comparison is WAY off base.

Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies states: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."

Yes, it is completely appropriate to compare Dowless to a Nazi. It wasn't just Jews who the Nazis gassed, it was also Gypsies and Gays. Do you think the first Nazi moves against Jews and Gays was talk of gassing them? No, it began with excluding them from job opportunities and equal housing, then it was registration, then ghettos. Hate and bigotry are slippery slopes-so if anyone is trivializing the use of the term Nazi, its people who criticize others for drawing the comparison when, in fact, don't we all wish someone had sounded the alarm around 1932?

very good article Mr. Orr.

I also want to say to those who keep complaining about "beating this dead horse" this is most certainly not a dead horse story, this is about standing up for what I believe in, equality for all. Jesus would never have treated others the way Shorter is treating respected faculty.

I'd like to put in a vote of "no confidence" for the entire board as well as Dowless. Their behavior throughout this entire ordeal has been appalling.

Can the name of the paper be changed? It should be called the "Shorter Times"

I was just inferring that it's getting old and tiresome.

They could change it to Shorter Times I suppose, but to be "faithful" to the name they'd have to then conduct a purge and fire anyone who isn't the right kind of Christian.

It's not getting old because Shorter has been a key foundation in our community for 138 years and people want to vent their spleen. Have at it!

If you think the stories about what is going on at Shorter are getting old and tiresome, try being one of the many employees and students who are being greatly affected by the new Nazi-esque regime. We are in deep distress on the hill.

Speaking of Heat.....I found it quite interesting that Dowless would now fire any staff member who is seen with alcohol in public …but when he was at Charelston South University (A Baptist College) and Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences……it’s ironic that in the CSU magazine 2004 of whom he was one of the writers listed this alumni (Sales Manager for Clarey’s Liquor Store) who died below……

Memorials for Charleston South University Alumni

William L. “Grumpy” Axson ’69, age 61, died June 29 in Charleston. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of Vietnam and was sales manager for Clarey’s Liquor Store. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406.

Hypocrites.

"Lux et veritas" -- Latin for "Light and truth." Shorter with Dowless should be translated as “ Making light of the truth”.

Mr Orr, I am glad to see that there is someone who appreciates the attributes of true leadership. Please know that you are supported by many. If the students speak up, it will surprise them how many people are behind them!

Great letter!

Stewart:

Have a student committee bring Rachel Held Evans to campus this coming Spring.

Invite CNN to cover her presentation and invite Dowles and Price to attend.

Have group readings of the Giberson and Stephens book The Anointed.

Explore the mindset of absolute certainty in Charles Kimball's When Religion Becomes Evil.

I am satisfied Dowles and Price fit the absolutitst template, and there is evil in what they are doing mistaking fundamentalismfor New Testament Christianity while they mock the best of the Baptist tradition.

Just a couple of nuanced changes to S.S.'s mandate here.

1. "Have a student committee bring" RAVI ZACHARIAS, the contemporary C.S. Lewis "to campus this coming spring!"

2. Invite FOX NEWS to "cover his presentation and invite BIll Clinton and his Cajun friend JAMES to attend."

3. "Have Group Readings of Ravi Zacharias' "Recover the Wonder" and Alex Metaxas, "Bonhoeffer, Spy, Martyr."

4. "Explose the mindset of absolute certainty in Carlyle Marney's, "THESE THINGS REMAIN".

"I AM SATISFIED THAT S.S will see evil" in mistaking liberalism for New Testament Christianity;" and will not be deceived and will realize that "God is not mocked"
