Huge new flat screen television sets were installed at Schroeder’s New Deli, 406 Broad St., Monday morning. The television screens are just the first in a series of changes that are coming over the next couple of weeks and months. “We’ve got to compete,” owner John Schroeder said.
One giant flat screen TV now hangs in the corner that leads from the main dining room to the courtyard, and the other is situated over the counter where the familiar wooden Welcome to Schroeder’s sign has been for the past three decades.
Schroeder said it might be a couple of days before Comcast actually has the service to the restaurant operational.
The next change will be even more dramatic.
“We’re going to take up the carpet and have the floors leveled and then go to a stained concrete surface,” Schroeder said. “People will get a kick out of the this; the tables won’t be rocking.” Schroeder said that when that work is being done, he would probably have to close the restaurant for a couple of days to completely redo the flooring.
Once the weather warms up, Schroeder said he also plans to open a sidewalk café on Broad Street.
For years, Schroeder’s has had an interior courtyard where customers could enjoy outdoor dining during pleasant weather.
“We’re just not sure exactly what we’re going to be able to do out there,” Schroeder said of a sidewalk presence.
Schroeder said he does not contemplate any major changes to the menu at his restaurant but dropped a hint that customers can anticipate Mr. Turtle playing a larger role at Schroeder’s.
The restaurant sells T-Shirts displaying Mr. Turtle nibbling on a slice of pizza in the courtyard with the inscription that reads, “Mr. Turtles Favorite Pizza.” He’s even got a video of a turtle chomping on the pizza. “At one time, there were at least five of them living out there,” Schroeder said.
