What is the primary purpose of your business? To provide tax return services at a professional level for reasonable prices.
What is the business background of the owners? Owner Kent Hood has been involved in the tax industry for more than 20 years. Seasonal staff members have many years in the tax industry.
Why did you start (or purchase) this particular business?
The current location formerly housed Walt Hood Insurance and Express tax Refund of Rome, both started by my father Walt Hood. I worked for him for many years. After my father retired I worked for both a major tax software company and continued to do tax returns for a number of clients. Also, for several years I worked for other firms, but decided it was time to venture out on my own.
What makes your business unique?
Hood’s Express Tax Service caters to all side of the tax preparation industry. We are able to offer bank product services to those clients who either do not have money to pay for their tax return up front or would just like to receive a quicker refund. We offer a partial refund anticipation loan this year of up to $1,500 available in as little as 24 hours for those who qualify. Additionally, Hood’s Express Tax Service offers a wide variety of returns including corporation, partnership, trust and non-profit returns for appropriate clients.
What do you enjoy most about your chosen profession?
The biggest reward in this profession is helping clients file a correct and clean return for a decent price. Many taxpayers are unaware of tax breaks that they may qualify for, and it is always nice to let them know what those are Also it is both interesting and intriguing to follow recent tax law changes with the IRS and be able to update clients accordingly.
What has been the biggest or most interesting challenge to overcome as a small business owner?
The tax industry is very competitive and there are a number of great firms in the Rome area. Coming into the industry where others have been in place for years is always a challenge, but we hope that excellent service, at affordable prices will help the firm gain new clients.
