The 5K run and one-mile health walk is scheduled to kick off on the Shorter campus at 8 a.m., with registration open at 7 a.m.
Kim Davis, executive director of the Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia, said the event is the center’s way of helping to bridge the gap between the experience of the victim and the community.
“We started the event as a way to get the community involved in raising awareness of sexual assault, hence the name Jogging for Justice,” said Davis. “We wanted to realize this crime happens in their community and that there are ways that can help. We also wanted to make the community aware that this is not just a victim’s problem but the community’s problem as well.”
Davis said that with the more knowledge the community has about these types of crimes, the better able it will be able to provide not only understanding but help prevent sexual assault from happening.
Last year’s race was started after the center ran out of funds for counseling services, and proceeds generated from the 2012 event will go toward the same cause.
Runners who take the top two spots in the men’s and women’s division will receive prizes, Davis said. First place winners will get a Camelbak and a gift card, while second place winners will get a gift package from Blue Sky Outfitters.
All runners will receive a T-shirt and bag for participating in the race.
Davis said the race would continue to be a yearly event.
