THE MOST VISIBLE FIREFIGHTER in the community is retiring. It is probably safe to say that half or more of the entire Greater Rome community has been trained in fire safety, or watched as their children/grandchildren showed off what they learned, courtesy of Rita Smith, the Rome-Floyd Fire Department education specialist in fire safety.

They learned drop-and-roll from her, the importance of smoke detectors, even how to make their own emergency fire extinguishers.

After some 37 years, no matter how informative her replacement, it is certain that Rita Smith not only was, but perhaps always will be, the blond-headed face of fire safety in Greater Rome.

Everybody knows fire personnel save lives (and property), often in very visible fashion. Rita Smith has perhaps “saved” the most of all through prevention by way of education. She has done more than earned her retirement years; she has earned the thanks of a grateful community.
