Janice Hopkins
“The day was Feb. 4, the day my son was born; the moment was three hours after his birth when I tearfully handed my newborn over so he could be transported by ambulance to Egleston Children’s Hospital to undergo neurosurgery.”
She was terrified as she watched her tiny son headed to Atlanta without her. “ I prayed for God to put his arms around him and watch over and protect him. I asked that he grant the doctors and nurses the knowledge and skill they needed to care for him. Lastly, I prayed that I be granted the strength and courage I needed for the days and weeks ahead. God heard me and answered all my prayers!”
Some three decades later, Brett is married with a child of his own, and Janice is the director of Harbin Clinic Cancer Center, where the native Roman is surrounded by patients and families who no doubt utter similar prayers each day.
“Working in the cancer center brings me in contact with the most incredible people — patients/families, staff and physicians. I am in constant awe of the grace, dignity and courage I see in patients and their families as they face challenging diagnoses and treatments. ”
In her personal time, Janice loves to travel and explore new places. “I enjoy antique shopping and decorating. I love to read, and I’m crazy about my e-reader I got for Christmas last year. I enjoy entertaining though I’m not a great cook.”
When it comes to TV, “I’m addicted to crime shows and HGTV, which I know is a weird combination.”
Other little-known facts about her: “I took years of dance classes: tap, ballet and acrobatics — not too useful in my current role. “ She also adores jelly beans, especially the SweetTart ones.
Her Bucket List includes: “ Visit Tuscany and stay for at least two months . Conquer my fears of injury and become a good snow skier; Forgive others and seek forgiveness from those I may have hurt; Have lots of grandchildren to love and spoil rotten; Celebrate my 50th wedding anniversary; Have a place at the beach.”
Her advice to young women: “Never compromise your core values, and never give up on your dreams. Find what you’re passionate about let that drive your career path. Develop an adventurous approach to your life and career. Instead of seeing problems and roadblocks along your path, see challenges and opportunities, and above all have fun with it.”
