ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Athens' mayor is proposing cuts to the transit system and fire department in the northeast Georgia city.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Mayor Nancy Denson is proposing cuts to night bus service as part of broader efforts to balance Athens-Clarke County's 2013 budget.

Denson released her $107.5 million budget plan Monday. It proposes ending Athens Transit bus service at 8 p.m.

The mayor's proposed budget also would eliminate a ladder truck company and three firefighters, saving $133,900.

Denson said she didn't think it would have a big effect because ladder trucks, which are used to put out fires in tall buildings, are rarely used.

Commissioners are scheduled to review the budget several times before voting June 5.
