THERE’S A STRONG ARGUMENT to be made that the best barbecue in the South can be found in Greater Rome ... at a whole lot of eating places as well as backyards.

No more proof is necessary than to note that, of 65 competing teams at the Roman Roast on the River competition — half the sauce slatherers being “professionals” who wander the country from event to event — it was again the hometown Runnin’ Wild BBQ team of the Burkhalter family that took “grand champion” honors.

And yes, the sheriff is a member of the team, no doubt in charge of keeping the competition honest and making sure that any who challenge Rome’s supremacy learn the error of their ways.
