Summer is here and many in our community who rely on the school food service program during the school year to provide quality, delicious and nutritious meals for their children are thinking about how they will be able to provide their children with the food they need during the summer while school is out. We have good news for those parents and children! The U.S. Department of Agriculture is partnering with local communities again this year to serve free meals for children and Floyd County Schools is teaming up with local churches and organizations to meet the need of our children.

It’s food that’s in, while school is out! "There are no income requirements, and any child under the age of 18 may visit one of the community locations to get a good meal," stated Donna Carver, director of School Nutrition for Floyd County Schools. "Site meal times will vary but we will providing food for children Monday through Friday at some of our local school cafeterias and many community locations." The meals will be available as early as May 29 at some of the locations serving during the summer.

Walk-in sites will be located in the cafeterias at the following Floyd County Schools with meals served for breakfast and lunch each Monday through Friday beginning on May 29 and running through August 7. Locations will begin serving breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.

Model High School

Pepperell High School

Coosa High School

These additional cafeteria locations will serve only lunch at 11:30 a.m.

Cave Spring and McHenry will be open from May 29 through August 7. Midway will open later on June 4 and serve through June 15.

Working with community agencies, churches and volunteers; there are a number of other community locations where meals will be served during the summer. "This is a vital program for our community and we look forward to working with the many organizations and volunteers coming together to make this possible for our children," said Dr. Lynn Plunkett, superintendent of Floyd County Schools. "Our free and reduced meal percentages have risen sharply during the economic downturn so this program will help many of our struggling families this summer."
