Four of the six cars stolen from a LaFayette dealership were driven until they were demolished, then pushed off Pigeon Mountain.

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said the damage is estimated at $40,000.

Four of the six vehicles were “demolished,” according to Wilson, with oil pans and transmissions that were ripped from the underbodies, while some were crashed into trees and boulders and pushed off Pigeon Mountain.

The vehicles were found in a remote area near Harrisburg Road following the Thursday night theft and “six or seven” people are wanted for questioning in connection with the crime, he said. The suspects range in age from the teens to early 20s.

It took several hours to remove the vehicles with a Georgia Forestry Commission bulldozer.

The sheriff’s office is offering a $500 reward for a tip leading directly to an arrest. Wilson said Cagle’s Used Cars also has offered “a substantial reward” for information that puts the thieves behind bars.

All car dealers need to install a GPS system on all of their cars that are for sale so they can be tracked. This may give the police a heads-up on where the cars and thieves are. And once the cars are sold then the GPS can be removed and put on another car.
