Jeff Lance played sports side-by-side with David Masters, and on Tuesday he was supporting his best friend by giving blood in his honor.
Masters, 21, was seriously injured on May 6 in Gulf Shores, Ala., when the vehicle in which he was riding was hit by a drunk driver. He is recovering at Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta.
River City Bank hosted the blood drive on Tuesday. The Blood Assurance bus was parked in the bank’s East Second Avenue parking lot from noon until 5 p.m.
When Lance heard about the blood drive in honor of his friend, he said there was no doubt he would be there.
Masters’ injuries happened less than a year after his younger brother, Ben, was hurt in a wreck in August 2011.
“I was kind of shocked because of what happened to Ben,” Lance said about hearing of David’s injuries.
Lance visited Masters in the hospital when he was in Pensacola but he was never fully conscious. Masters was in a medically induced coma while in the Florida hospital.
“There still needs to be a lot of prayer for him,” Lance said. “He’s real strong and he’ll pull through.”
About 22 people showed up to support the blood drive.
Those who couldn’t make it on Tuesday can go by the Blood Assurance office on Shorter Avenue and donate blood later in Master’s honor.
