POLK COUNTY — Tank is a one-eyed therapy dog with limited vision in his remaining eye.

The American bulldog and German shepherd mixed breed attracted the attention of Gail Posey at the Polk County Animal Control Center. Working as a volunteer, she admired his spirit despite the fact that he had a damaged eye, which was a result of allergies and ulcers.

Gail contacted a specialist in Marietta. His eye was checked and later removed.

Tank then started a training program for therapy dogs. He completed it and qualified as a 1-year-old, the youngest age an animal is accepted.

As a therapy dog, Tank can go to nursing homes, hospitals and schools.

“I decided to take him to Goodyear School in support of their reading program,” Gail said.

When students transitioned to the new Van Wert Elementary School, Tank continued his visits at that location.

Tank has become so popular, he has a page in the school’s 2012 yearbook. He is featured with his photo and the words “Reading Buddy.” He was also honored with a going away party.
