WHEN Sheriff Tim Burkhalter was elected, one of his campaign promises was to rid Floyd County of the methamphetamine epidemic. I am sick and tired of my stepchildren, loved ones, family and friends being swept up into this cloud of destruction, incarceration and death.

Where has Burkhalter’s promise to rid our hometown of this poison gone? I once had great admiration and respect for him, but the plague is still running rampant through the streets of Rome. When is he going to follow through with his campaign promise and rid the town of it? More than one of my loved ones are sitting in jail right now due to this drug that is still rampaging through the lives of so many who are still so very young and so naive to the dangers it brings with it. Responses are most anticipated.

As Sheriff, Burkhalter has the ability to create a special task force to combat those that produce and distribute meth in this community. He has not done this nor has the Rome-Floyd Metro Drug Task Force been aggressive combating this problem. Ask any patrol officer in this community what the problem is and they will tell you that it is the judges putting the users on probabtion. They do this to make priobabtion money for the county, It is a cash cow! If the Sheriff, who promised to stop this problem, would create his own "Meth Posse" and concentrate on the dealers/producers it could make a difference. Education is a good thing but only helps a tiny bit. These people proffiting from hooking people on this drug shoukld be destroyed, arrested, convicted and given the maximum penalties possible. I refuse to vote for Burkhalter or any challenger unless they explicity begin talking about his problem publicly, loudly and honestly. Whaqt's it gonna be Coop, Tim?

Prossarian:

Careful. Your ignorance is showing. You want something said publicly, loudly, and honestly? Here you go:

You would be correct about judges placing more people on probation than in prison. Where you are wrong is that probation fines and fees go to the state on all felony cases. Meth is a felony.

The county's budget has been slashed to include: not hiring officers, not buying police cars, yet you propose creating a "Meth Posse."

You also propose giving the maximum penalties possible, while these maximum possibilities have just been drastically reduced by Georgia's legislature via sentencing reform, which limits the judges and ties their hands. Apparently, in the short term, it is cheaper to put somebody on probation than send them to prison.

Until the global and national economy, unemployment, and overall moral fiber of this state and country improve, you should not get your hopes up too high. It is absolutely impossible to fight a war on drugs with no manpower, tools, or teeth in the law.

In addition, it has been my experience that people of this community speak out of both sides of their mouth. On one side, you speak "get tough on crime, increase enforcement and police presence"; yet, when this happens, from the other side of your mouth, you murmur and cry foul about increased traffic enforcement, over-zealous practices, and whine like a scalded dog when YOUR requested increased enforcement hits too close to home.

In your previous post, you blame local police "storm trooper tactics" and "bully tactics."

If you ever truly decide which side of your mouth you truly side with, and are brave enough to step outside your veil of protection, you can hold the proper people accountable by contacting your elected representatives in the Georgia legislature.

Until you take the time to educate yourself on the issues, consider all of your credibility to have just been revoked.

please dont tell me that you really think that your family members are addicted to meth and are in jail because tim burkhalter has not "rid" rome georgia of the meth problem? you really dont think that do you?

surely you understand that they are responsible for their own actions! the sheriff has nothing to do with these meth heads going somewhere getting this crap and bringing it to rome to snork and smoke.

this is absurd.

i have heard it all now.....

IN NO WAY DO I THINK MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE ON METH BECAUSE OF THE SHERIFF!!! FOR GOD'S SAKES - CAN YOU NOT READ? I was asking not BLAMING the Sheriff, I have even more pertinent issues keeping me up at night than this, but when it comes to people i care about getting caught up in it,it tells me the meth rings that are still in Rome are back in business and growing. You have to take out the big key players to start closing the channels. In no way did i BLAME the sheriff, I just asked. No reason to get RUDE there FAKE NAME, at least I put my John Hancock on my query. But once again thanks for your input, if that's what you want to call it.

Every time that I visit Rome and leave my heart breaks a little more with what I see of the drug and alcohol addictions in that town. I personally have to deal with the meth epidemic in Rome bc I have family and friends that have become addicted to this horrible drug. Yes I grafted with what has been said here that it was their choice to try it and their choice to choose that lifestyle but this drug has addictive powers like no other. I don't think the Sheriff is to blame and thats not what bollen is doing here, she's simply crying out to him, asking him, where is the help where is the crack down on this epidemic that is ruining the town that she grew up in. I know how he feels. Being in law enforcement in another state I cn agree with the o e comment without even knowing how the court system works in Rome. There has to be tougher penalties and the Judges have got to quit making probation an option.

Burkhalter has been running the C.H.A.M.P.S. program to educate 7th graders on the dangers of meth, bullying, internet security, gangs, peer pressure, etc. He Does a Parent /Teacher methamphetamine education program. Students are required to pass ADAP (Alcohol and Drug Awareness program) before receiving a drivers license. He helped to create the teen info line along with Students Against Destructive Decisions to report drug activities. He also has started what is called the Turning Point classes (a scared straight type program in floyd county)

In 2011 CHAMPS did 56 classes in this community. Thats just shy of 5 per month and a little more than once per week. The sherriffs department also conducting 12 drug awareness classes in 2011 independent of the CHAMPS program.

Burkhalter has said many times that incarceration is not the cure for the meth problem, and that education is. He has been working dilligently to educate the community on the dangers of meth.

Everyone in this community knows what meth will do and how awful it is. Many of these people know because of Burkhalter's education programs.

Unfortunately with all of the information available about how horrible the drug is, people still use. You can't put that on the sherriff.

And YET the drugs is still on every other street in more than likely 1 in 5 homes. The Sheriff is about to run for office again, I at least home he can crack down harder this time! and once again! I was QUESTIONING not BLAMING! Education is one way to make a TINY dent in the problem, but so is sex ed in regards to the astonishing number of teen pregnancies! You can educate til you are blue in the face, but until you CUT OFF the channels bringing the trash into the city, you aren't going to get anywhere with your so called education. But thanks for your feedback anyway!

Ok, I've got to jump in here.... The only thing I could fault the Sheriff with, is maybe making it look like he has more control than he really does over this situation. He has plenty of programs, that DO help. The REAL PROBLEM with drugs here is when the FCSO do catch these addicts and arrest them, the pansy judges give them probation, even after the 2nd, 3rd and 4th charge.

I have witnessed this first hand

I have seen the "real life" of a "meth head". My wife and I, at age 18/20, adopted our 3 year old neice. My wife's oldest sister was on the Jenny Crack Diet and left the child to whomever would take her. 26 months of DFCS court dates, home visits and intrusion into our lives to make it final. It took 7 years, probation for meth charges in Floyd, Bartow, Gordon and Whitfield counties multiple failed drug tests while on probation before she finally had to do time. She's been in for 2.5 years now....and cries that she wished she could have spent 2 years in prison, 9 years ago. First offender charges only enabled her to keep going. We need to BUST their $_*()$%_)&%$ on the first charge, so hard they won't even THINK about trying that crap again.

GROW A SPINE PEOPLE..we have to get tough on this issue. I don't want to hear this "addiction" crap. You weren't addicted to meth the first time you tried it! What's your excuse for that one?

I'm going to go take a BP pill now!

I would also LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Sheriff Burkhalter (or Cooper if he wins) follow the lead of Sheriff Arpaio. Build a tent city for meth head. Make em sweat the addiction out.

Sheriff Burkhalter, look at Arpaio's margin of victory in the last election. Follow his lead, and you'll follow his success.

"It is not up to the courts, the state, law enforcement or anybody else to help drug users do what the rest of us do every day which is to obey the law and stay clean."

The above statement and comments below stand in stark contrast to the ACTUAL government philosophy held by the courts, the state and law enforcement concerning drug control policies. In fact, all of those policies and strategies hinge on the idea that it IS up to them to control and stop the production, distribution and use of illegal substances.

Do I agree that it is the government's job to keep people clean? Absolutely NOT. I think it's a colossal waste of money. I believe in being held accountable for your own actions. But this is not about what I BELIEVE or THINK to be true, it's about the REALITY of drug control policy in the U.S.

The government MAKES it their responsibility when they declare a War on Drugs, and local officials like Sheriff Burkhalter MAKE it their problem when they involve themselves by making pledges to our community, and creating programs with our money.

A simple google search for "Sheriff Tim Burkhalter meth," reading RNT archived articles, or researching his policies and programs (GANG/METH Awareness, C.H.A.M.P.S, Parent/Teacher Methamphetamine Education Program) shows that Sheriff Burkhalter has obviously made the subject of meth use, prevention, education and family support groups an active priority not only during his campaigning, but during his time serving as sheriff, as well.

That is an EXCELLENT post! And once again i said i was ASKING, not BLAMING! One has absolutely NO RIGHT to blame anyone for their drug use, but once again, if its not there, then there's that much less opportunity for temptation. Tim Burkhalter has always been an extremely kind and respected man in my opinion as well as experience. It was just a question. A cry for answers, not googled regurgitations.

Not googled regurgitations, just presenting documented facts about Sheriff Burkhalter's past programs and policies regarding meth-amphetamines to the previous commenters calling into question the truthfulness of his pledge to aid the community in the fight against drugs.

I was by no means saying that his efforts and programs have been effective or successful, just presenting proof that he has made it a priority, if not the focus, of his time as Sheriff.

I believe it goes further up than Sheriff Burkhalter. When the Meth Clinic in Rome closed for whatever reason, it has gotten worse. I think that everyone needs to be held accountable for their own actions. I have known many people that have done this and other drugs and I know that it was all their choose, but I also want to hold the "cooks" to a higher punishment than what is given.

June 01, 2012
Yes, too right you are about the cooks, I will be the first one to admit i had my own personal two year bout with it 7 years ago, and I quit and moved on; thankfully my stepdaughter turned herself in and is seeking help, it is just an issue that is making a huge comeback into my life via other channels, and this is why i am snatching her up and bringing her out here to Texas with me because as long as she's with me I know she's not on it. I now know what my parents felt and the fear they must have felt in my two years of "running" in the dope game, but I am older, wiser, and will be the first to knock someone in the head when i see or even suspect such activities. I just wanted to stand up and put the truth back in the minds of my fellow Romans that, when Burkhalter was running for election, the one thing that sold me was that he would be cracking down on the epidemic, and as most of anyone who was in Rome when the former sheriff was in office, Rome Georgia was like a stopping point on the Drug Trail. It is one's choice to do it or not, but like i replied to another post just a bit ago, the less it's around, the less opportunity for temptatioin. Thank you for the feed back, it is all i wanted. Thank you very much. :)

June 01, 2012
PS and too right you are about the "further up" concept. My great uncle was an officer in Summerville and the chief of police for one year, and there is more crooked law enforcement than you or anyone else could possibly fathom up there. Which is why he resigned after that one year and went back to regular cop duties after he saw how backwards they were up there. Granted this was several years ago, but its there, and its everywhere else. Whether we like it or not.

The only people to blame for the meth problem are the people who use it. We all have two choices in life when it comes to an illegal drug. We can choose to use it or choose not to use it. Those who choose to use meth, cocaine or whatever choose to do it and should suffer punishment as a criminal. It is not up to the courts, the state, law enforcement or anybody else to help drug users do what the rest of us do every day, which is to obey the law and stay clean. It's not that hard to do what is right,

June 01, 2012
Wow, well good and bad is always expected. But I distinctly remember his pledge to wipe out meth from Rome And Floyd County, which is why he was always on my good list as opposed to my shit list. He is a very nice man, and no one holds anyone down and forces them to do it, unless its drano and its the 80's where they did that to that girl. But if its not there, then there's a significant decrease in the opportunity to do it.

Mrs. Bollen, you are so right. I agree with you! We as parents, or in your case step parents or whatever, have no business being responsible for our kids actions. Sheriff Burkhalter and all other elected officials should hang their heads in shame. To think that the parents should be responsible to teach their own children right from wrong is absolutely absurd. To think that parents should be responsible for helping their children seek help for drug and alcohol problems is just as absurd. Law enforcement works with a very limited budget just as most county government agencies do. Even with unlimited resources, the meth problem would still run rampant through Rome and Floyd County. But to blame one individual person is frankly, crazy as hell. If your family member is in jail due to their meth problem, it sounds like someone is doing their job. Sounds like jail is a good place for them.

Of course if you can show me where Tim Burkhalter, or any other elected official or politician in Floyd County, has promised to rid Floyd County of the meth problem......I will issue you a public apology in a venue of your choosing.

In addition, I blame Sheriff Burkhalter for not doing anything about all the fast food resturaunts in Floyd County. He is the reason for the obesity problem in Floyd County as well.

I hope the more sane citizens of this county, unlike the author of this editorial, find the humor in my post.

Thank you for the first paragraph, however Im not blaming him im asking where his actions to eradicate it went? The fast food comment is irrelevant and childish. Sorry, not too funny. But thanks for the POSITIVE comments. :)

June 01, 2012
My comments about Sheriff Burkhalter being responsible for the obesity problem is no more childish than your opinion that he is responsible for your failure to provide guidance to your child. Dont get me wrong, i am sorry your daughter is facing this dilemma. I am not sorry that you feel its everyone elses fault but your own. I believe if you had spent more time parenting and less time doing methamphetamine yourself, your daughter may not be in this situation right now. Unfortunately for your daughter, it appears the apple did not fall from the tree.

I wish your daughter the best of luck in fignting her addiction, and you the best of luck in making through all ten steps of the program. Thequicker you move out of the first stage (denial) the quicker you can move on to step 2 (the acceptance stage. Good luck with that process.

Wow. So we as individuals don't hold any responsibility for our own actions? Your family is destroyed because of the Sheriff's actions? I haven't ever seen him force someone to take meth. If it isn't available in Floyd County, the meth heads will just drive further to find it... until they themselves make a choice to stop using....

The Sheriff said he would get rid of all meth in Floyd County? I'm not sure I believe that he made that pledge.

None of your family is being "swept up" in the meth problem. They choose to join voluntarily. Surely none of them started using meth thinking it was a reasonable decision that would make their life better.

If that's the way you wish to look at it then that is your opinion and you are fully entitled to it, but we vote people into office, and we have a right to dispute the "vote for me" angles they threw in there to get us to vote for them! Thanks for the feedback!

not blame, QUESTION. Tim Burkhalter has always seemed a wonderful, kind and upstanding man. I have waited on him in the restaurants i've worked in, but I have every right to QUESTION whatever i see fit to. The meth problem is everywhere, but its hurting too many of my loved ones, and its not just me, ITS EVERYONE! So I felt it in my head and heart to finally speak up and ASK: WHERE ARE YOUR CAMPAIGN SEAL-THE-DEALS AT NOW? - thanks for the feedback though! :)
